1.4 Service Learning log reflection

When I proposed my project to my mentor teacher I did not know how much work was waiting for me. However, I realized I am capable of taking on a big project. I realized how much I can take on in so little time. Once I put my heart into this project for the learners, doing something educational but also something that they would enjoy, I gave it my all. I had to type out the words and organized everything. I had to make sure about sponsors. Some of the money came out of my own pocket which I do not mind as I kept in mind that this is for the learners. I managed to get sponsors for everything I needed. The most challenging part was basically having to do the things by myself and not having the help I was suppose to have. I cannot take all the credit as the language teachers also chipped in with advice and helping me to search for the appropriate level words for each grade. The successes of this project was seeing the joy and excitement of the participants and the support they had from the rest of their peers cheering then on, on the day of the event. With the help of my mentor/s and also my family member I gained much more respect towards those planning an event. My project was not such a big event but to me doing it for the first time it felt like a big deal. I realized once you commit to a project you have to do and take it on with a positive attitude, if not everything will not go according to plan. The Spelling-Bee I organized was the first the school held. This is something that brought excitement to learners knowing that they will receive certificates for taking part. I made sure to tell learners to enjoy themselves and not put to much pressure in themselves. Teachers also appreciated this as learners spelling has improved tremendously. The school ensured me that this is something they will be doing each year.
